The art
My creative process takes the history and tradition of art & handicraft and moves that process into a contemporary space. The use of needlepoint is derived from the personal and is an acknowledgement of the historical antecedents of women who expressed their creativity through needlework and quilts. The mixing of pigments harks back to the history of color before synthetic paint was accidently discovered. Since my work is improvised, my needlepoint designs and my color choices are not directly planned out. However, I do mix the powdered pigment with marble dust and gesso to create my own palette. Each one of my needlepoints are individually design and are one-of -a -kind. Since my work sometimes refers to the art of healing, I use the word “suture” to describe my stitching or sewing. I am questioning if art can be a healing, unifying process,
not only for myself, but also for those who are experiencing the work.
